To multiply with a 1-digit factor, in this case 4, you start on the right side. I like to use a connecting line to remind myself where I have already multiplied. 4 times 6 is 24. Place the 4 in the ones place and carry the 2. 4 times 5 is 20, add the 2 and you get 22. Place the 2 in the tens place and carry the other 2. 2 times 4 is 8 plus 2 equals 10. 256 times 4 is equal to 1 thousand twenty-four.
