To add whole numbers you start on the right side in the 1s place. 6 plus 5 is 11 that means you have 1 one and you carry the 1 group of 10. Then you continue adding in the 10s place. 1 plus 4 is 5, plus 1 more is 6, plus 8 is 14. You place the 4 in the 10s place and carry the 1. 1 plus 2 is 3, plus 3 is 6, plus 1 is 7.
